Simply Jesus: The Perfect Storm

In 1991, the Perfect Storm (aka as the Halloween Nor’easter of 1991) hit the North East Coast of the US. It was the storm behind the popular movie of the same name. The Cyrus Cylinder and testable theories

Karl Popper pondered the question “When should a theory be ranked as scientific?” and came up with the following criteria (summarized from the article):

  • confirming a theory is easy.
  • a scientific theory should be falsifiable.
  • testing a theory means trying to prove it is false.
  • testing a theory means verifying its predictions are observed.

While not everyone holds to Popper’s philosophy of science the criterion of testability, falsifiability and predictability are considered important for any scientific theory. In fact the claim that is often leveled against “religion” is that it can’t do any of these things and thus can easily be dismissed by the scientific community. Continue reading

Jesus and Scripture (Scripture and the Authority of God by N.T. Wright)

This is part 5  of the series blogging through the book Scripture and the Authority of God by N.T. Wright. You might want to start with part 1 and work your way through the series.

Wright uses chapters 3 through 6 to examine the use of the Scriptures throughout the history of the church. This post will review Wright’s cursory examination of ‘Scripture and Jesus’, which he summarizes as follows:

at the heart of his work lay the sense of bringing the story of scripture to its climax, and thereby offering to God the obedience through which the Kingdom would be accomplished.

For Wright, the Kingdom is about God putting ‘the world to rights, judging evil, and bringing forgiveness and new life’.
